How CBD Hash Is Made: Dry Sift, Bubble Hash and Charas

Separation Is the Whole Story

Hash is not an ingredient added to hemp. It is hemp with everything except the resin removed. The trichomes — the resin glands on the surface of the flower — hold most of the cannabinoids and terpenes; hash-making is simply the business of separating those glands from the plant material as cleanly as possible.

Three methods dominate, and each produces a recognisably different product. If you stock resin, being able to explain which is which is the difference between selling on price and selling on quality.

1. Dry Sift — Mechanical, Solvent-Free, Traditional

Dried flower is agitated over fine mesh screens. The resin glands are brittle when cured and snap off, falling through the mesh while the plant matter stays above. What collects underneath is loose resin powder — pollen, also called skuff or kief.

Screen size determines grade. The finest early passes yield the cleanest sift; later passes carry progressively more plant matter and sell for less. Leave the powder loose and it stays pollen; press it under warmth and pressure and it becomes traditional hash. This is the method behind our pollen and dry sift range and behind classic Moroccan-style pressings.

A refinement worth knowing about is static separation, which uses static electricity to pull resin heads away from residual plant matter. It produces a paler, cleaner result than screening alone — our Golden Static is made this way.

2. Ice Water Separation — Bubble Hash

Plant material is agitated in ice water. The cold makes the trichomes brittle enough to break away, and because resin does not dissolve in water it can be caught in a series of progressively finer filter bags. The name comes from the way high-quality bubble hash bubbles when heat is applied.

Ice water separation can produce a very clean product, but it is more equipment-intensive than dry sifting and the material must be dried carefully afterwards — residual moisture is what ruins a batch. Like dry sift, it uses no solvents at any point.

3. Charas — Hand-Rubbed, Fresh Plant

Charas is made from living plants rather than dried material. Fresh flowers are rubbed between the hands until resin accumulates on the skin, which is then collected and rolled. It is the oldest method of the three and by far the most labour-intensive, which is why genuine charas is rare and expensive relative to sifted product.

What About Filtered and High-Percentage Grades?

Beyond the three traditional methods sit modern refinement steps. Multi-pass filtration takes sifted material and puts it through successive stages, each removing more plant matter — our 3X Filtered is an example. The result is cleaner, paler and higher in cannabinoid content.

There is an honest trade-off here that is worth telling customers about. Refinement strips terpenes along with plant matter, so a heavily filtered grade is more potent but less aromatically complex than a good traditional press. Neither is "better" — they serve customers who are buying on different criteria. Our 0% THC line sits at the far end of that spectrum.

How to Judge What You Are Being Offered

Texture and aroma tell you most of it. Good resin softens with warmth and holds its shape when cool; material that crumbles to dust cold or stays greasy at room temperature has usually been made or stored badly. A flat, hay-like nose generally means old material or over-heated pressing, whatever the percentage claims.
