Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced in the same resin glands as cannabinoids. They are not unique to hemp — limonene is what makes citrus peel smell like citrus, pinene is what makes pine forests smell like pine — but the particular combination a plant produces is what gives each strain its recognisable character.

This matters commercially more than most retailers realise. Customers standing at a counter cannot perceive a CBD percentage. They can perceive smell, immediately and without explanation. When someone says a flower is "better" than another at the same CBD content, they are almost always describing its terpene profile.

The Terpenes You Will Meet Most Often

• Myrcene: earthy, musky, slightly herbal. The most common terpene in most hemp varieties and a large part of what people describe as a "classic" smell.
• Limonene: bright citrus. Prominent in strains like Lemon Haze and a reliable seller because the aroma reads as "fresh" to almost everyone.
• Pinene: sharp pine and rosemary. Often present alongside myrcene and contributes to the "green" edge in greenhouse material.
• Caryophyllene: pepper and clove. Unusual among terpenes in that it also interacts with cannabinoid receptors directly.
• Linalool: floral, lavender-like. Common in strains marketed toward the evening segment.

Why Terpene Content Fades — And What That Costs You

Terpenes are volatile. They evaporate with heat, light and air exposure, which is why a flower that smelled remarkable on arrival can smell like hay two months later in a badly stored jar. The cannabinoid content will barely have moved; the thing customers actually judge will have collapsed.

Terpenes in Resin and Hash

Because resin is made from the trichomes themselves, hash concentrates terpenes along with cannabinoids — which is why a good traditional pressing has a far more intense nose than the flower it came from. It is also why over-heated pressing damages a product: too much heat during production drives off exactly the compounds that justify the price.

The difference is easiest to notice by comparing a traditional Moroccan pressing against a heavily refined grade. Multi-pass filtration removes plant matter but also strips terpene content, which is the honest trade-off behind our 0% THC range: cleaner and higher in CBD, less aromatically complex.

How to Use Terpenes When Buying

Ask for the terpene panel, not just the cannabinoid figure. Many certificates report both. A flower at 12% CBD with a rich, layered terpene profile will outsell a 16% flower that smells of nothing, and it will generate the repeat purchase that actually builds a shop.
